Last offseason, the Miami Heat had just ended a 54-28 season with a run into the playoffs. The team was sharp, and ready for more. But, some bad moves got the team into trouble, and the GM fired. Halfway through this past season, a new GM arose on the scene of NBA Legends. He was experienced, clean cut, and ready to get this team back into shape. GM Josh Barber took the job of the Heat GM, and was on his way trading and negotiating to get his team into playoff contention.
The season was lost already when the GM took over, so he set his sights on next season and the offseason. His first move was to trade guard Jason Williams along with forward Channing Frye to the Boston Celtics for guard TJ Ford.
"This trade was for talent purposes only. Williams was an expiring contract that we didn't need, and Frye hasn't been producing for a while. So, we got a talented guard that could start for us, creating a super fast backcourt of Ford and Wade."
Next, GM Barber sent Jerome James and his horrible contract along with Alonzo Morning for the expiring contract of Stromile Swift. This move will end up saving the team around 6 mil in cap to use this offseason. The GM also trading two small expiring contracts, Dorrell Wright and Nenad Krstic, to the Clippers for the non-expiring cheap contracts of Rodney Carney and Jared Dudley, who will both be key contributors on the bench this upcomming season.
The next two trades that the GM would perform really made the franchise was it is today.
First, the GM traded TJ Ford and Stromile Swift, along with a potential top 10 pick, for Carlos Boozer, Marcus Williams, and a 1st rounder.
"It was hard to give up the pick, but if you have a chance to get a franchise big man, you have to take it."
The GM's last move is considered his best. He traded Dwayne Wade and Udonis Haslem for Danny Granger, Chris Kaman, and what turned out to be the 11th pick in the draft.
"I love this trade for so many reasons. First off, I get two potential allstars in Granger and Kaman. Secondly, I get to shed the 6 mil of salary that Haslem was taking up. We also got a pick in the draft. It's almost like a 3 for 1."
In just a few months, this team had transformed from a lineup of Jason Williams - Dwayne Wade - Peja Stojakavic - Channing Frye - Alonzo Morning to a lineup of Marcus Williams - Danny Granger - Peja - Carlos Boozer - Chris Kaman.
The team also has about 30 mil in cap to spend this offseason, as well as two first round draft picks, one of them pick 11.
But, the fans have even more to look forward to from this GM. The GM has guranteed a playoff spot for the Heat this season, and has promised the fans that the team will make it to the championships at least once in the next three seasons.
"We have a great core of guys that we can keep together for a long time."
The Heat are expected to use their 30 mil in cap this offseason to target either Jose Calderon, Monta Ellis, or Devin Harris to fill the vacancy at the point guard position. The team should have over 15 mil left over to build up the bench or potentially sign another star free agent.
One thing is for sure. The Heat have a lot of expectations, and it appears that they can live up to them.
