I like Bedard and he is an upgrade but I don't like to see the trend of trading away young superstar type players. Griffey, ARod (let him walk), Cruz (trade destroyed his career), and now Jones.

Should be Jones/Sherrill for Bedard. I'm split on this, Jones is a great young player, and Bedard only has 2 years left on his contract. But the AL West is pretty easy to steal from the Angels, so with Bedard/Hernandez, wow....Not to mention Bedard will only be better at Safeco field.

I think they should have just gone after Santana.
Jones and Morrow and 2 fillers for Santana.
the Yankees were offering Cabrera, Hughes, and Clippard for Santana.
but they pulled in last second cause the Twins wanted Kennedy.

sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3229937Deal's almost done. If it goes through, it's most likely Jones, Sherrill(great lefty reliever), Chris Tillman(pitching prospect), Butler(2nd baseman prospect I believe), and Kameron Mickolio(never heard of him) all for Bedard. Too much, Santana was less. I hope Bavasi doesn't have Cingular so halfway through negotiations, the called gets dropped.

Santana wasn't less. That is why the M's backed off of Santana.

Santana wasn't less. That is why the M's backed off of Santana. Jones and Gomez are equal, take or give. The prospects the M's are giving up for Bedard are much better than 3 pitchers that are 20-25ish that have bad minor league records. I wouldn't have given that for Santana seeing as he'll be hella hard to re-sign, but keeping your prospects and trying to sign Bedard when he's a FA in 2 years would be much better IMO. But that's what happens when you have Bill Bavasi as your GM.

Sherrill is a good setup man but it isn't like the Mariners don't have other young arms in the minors (Mark Lowe for example) that could replace him. Adam Jones >>>> Gomez. He is a true five tool prospect that already has more power than Gomez will ever have. Jones may not be as fast but he has 30-40 steals a year speed plus he'll develop into a gold glove caliber outfielder. The other two prospects wouldn't even have a chance to break into the majors for another 4 or 5 years at least. The Mariners have much better prospects that will be majors ready within two years than the two other players included in the deal. They also HAVE to shore up the starting rotation. Bedard is young enough to be around when Felix develops into that dominant #1 he is so close to being. Add in their 6'7" starting pitcher they drafted in the first round of the last draft and they will have a formidable 1-2-3 punch.
I am hesitant to trade Jones b/c I've seen Cruz, Griffey, and ARod go since I've been a fan and I'm not thrilled at letting another HOF caliber (tools-wise) go but at least they made a trade. This is the first real trade they made since trading Griffey. That is a long time. Again, Jones is the only REAL prospect the M's would be giving up. The others don't have a good shot at ever being called up let alone getting an everyday job.

And it's official. Hopefully they can at least get into the playoffs. Outfield is horrible now though, hitting there is good with Ichiro, Ibanez, and Wilkerson, but the defense is bad. Have fun chasing those fly balls Ichiro.

Balentin shouldn't be that much of a drop off in right field and Ibanez has always been a solid OF.
