It looks like the Twins are fielding offers for Johan Santana and the asking price is steep. It looks like whom ever lands the ace lefty will have to part with at least two good young prospects as well as some major league ready talent. I was wondering if you guys think Santana is worth paying that price.
Red Sox apparently are involved in discussions and reports indicate that the Twins would ask for two of either Ellsbury, Lester or Bucholz as well as an everyday player (Crisp?) in exchange for Santana. I would hate to see Boston part with an exciting player like Ellsbury. I'd also hate to see them trade Bucholz whom many have pegged as a future Number 1 starter. But how often is a pitcher of Santana's calibre available? Imagine a rotation of Beckett, Santana, Matsuzaka, Schilling and Wakefield? Is it better to hang on to these young guys in hopes that one of them has as much major league success as Santana or is it better to trade for the player who has already shown how successful they can be?
I'm really on the fence with this one.

I know the Mariners aren't getting him with what the Twins want from them. It's kinda funny they're even considered. Minny won't get Adam Jones and Brandan Morrow + a 3rd prospect for a two-year "rental" of Santana IMO. With no Guillen, Jones will start, and Morrow will probably be a 3rd SP for us too..

They want Adam Jones? They crazy. The Mariners have one of the best farm system's in all of baseball and they want Jones. If I was the Mariners I'd offer any prospect not Jones or Marrow. Santana would be a sick add to the M's rotation.

Oh, and the Red Sox have to get Santana if the other option is the Yankees. They can't let him go to the Yankees after that ARod debacle.

The Red Sox don't -have- to get Santana like previously mentioned. They just have to drive the price up enough so the Yanks give up a few of their best prospects...and it's working amazingly. I've read that as of this afternoon, the Yanks are willing to change their offer to include Melky, Hughes, AND Kennedy. This is exactly what the Sox wanted to happen. Everyone and their mother knew that the Yankees were probably going to make the strongest push, so the Red Sox threw in a decent offer of Lester, Bowden, Crisp, and Masterson...And looky looky, the Yanks offered one of their 'untouchables'. Good work, Boston.
(Expect Boston to inquire about Dan Haren after a Santana-to-the-Yanks deal gets done. He's the better option anyways. Younger, signed for the next 4 seasons (Or 3, i forget) and continues to improve every season...and he'll come a lot cheaper to the sox than Santana would've.

ESPN has been reporting this pretty heavily for the past week or so. Let's see; you have the best pitcher in baseball possibly going to either of the 2 best baseball franchises..I'd say that's big. If only my Mariners would make a GOOD move..Soriano for Ho. Ram was horrible..

Yeah, I've been waiting for them to do something for a few years now and not on the Heathcliff Slocumb level.

why on earth should the Yankees trade prospects for Santana, when they can simply buy him for free next year.
they could have Santana, Hughes, W@ng, Kennedy, and Mussina (or Dellin Betances)
what the Yankees need is a future 1B.
they have the young pitching prospects, and outfielders in Austin Jackson and Jose Tabata.
after Giambi is gone, who will play 1B for them. I hope not Eric Duncan he sucks, Shelly is good but not that good.
and besides why on earth do they have to give up Hughes.
they got Kennedy, Betances, Olhendorf, Edwar Ramirez, Humberto Sanchez, Kevin Whealen, Jose Veras, Brian Bruney, Chien-Ming W@ng, Andrew Brackman, Darrell Rasner, Jeff Karstens, Tyler Clippard, Alan Horne, Jeff Marquez, Chase Wright, and Matt DeSalvo.
and if they want hitters probably Cabrera or Austin Jackson has to be in the deal, as long as it's not Tabata.
but they have Betemit, Shelly and Eric Duncan, Alberto Gonzalez, just to name a few good hitters they have.
but defiantely Jackson or Melky has to be in the deal.
