KG can also shoot the occasional three while Duncan's range ends at around 18 ft. KG also has a better face up game but still has a very good post up game. The fact KG is unguardable and has been almost his entire career tips in his favor among other things. Duncan is all fundamentals and not much athleticism. You put a good defensive big on Duncan, Timmy will struggle while KG will still get it done. Plus, KG brings so much raw emotion to every game he can almost will his teammates to play better. Duncan needs better players to be productive and to win. The one year KG has any semblance of a team (Cassell and Spree) he got to the Western Finals. Take Ginobili, Finley, Horry, Barry, and Bowen off of that team and they'll struggle to stay out of the lottery. Plus, there was that sick series KG had where he had like two or three 20-20 games. Duncan is consistent but he could never be overly dominant like KG has been in the past and can be when needed to.

Duncan makes those guys better, Duncan makes anyone better on the Spurs. 2. KG has a perimeter game and that's a problem sometimes, because sometimes he plays like a SG instead of a PF/C.

Robinson needed one more good player on the team. Sean Elliot and Avery Johnson are role players not the complementary player Robinson needed. You could also make the case that Duncan has never been on a bad team. He had David Robinson and then Tony Parker and company. He's always had an all-star/superstar type player to play alongside with. There is no comparison.
