THE DETROIT NEWS
Will the Pistons make a big deadline deal?
Detroit, Michigan- It seemed when the All Star break hit that Detroit was a team that was going to need to sell. They had lost 3 straight, were out of the playoff race, and its hard to believe when this team has been to the Finals and ECF the last two years. This team did make a minor tweak to the lineup though. That was inserting Grant Hill in to the SF slot and moving Jet and J-Rich up a postion.
News Flash: It seems to have worked
Grant Hill has had two 20-point games in a row and the Pistons beat two very good teams in dominating fashion. Yes, they were getting it done one offense in those games, but what was it that really won them for the team? There lock down D. They held the Rockets down to only 93 points, and shocked the Nets by holding them to 83 points. The X-Factor in both of these games after the all star break you ask? Nene. He had two very solid games and is trying to make a statement that he loves Detroit and wants to stay a Piston, this being after the rumors that he could be going to Houston.
The bench is another thing you really have to keep you eye on. If the starters go out and bench comes in, you dont see a change. The Pistons by far have the leagues best bench consiting of Stuckey, Robinson, Millsap, and Maxiell. All 4 guys who want to make a name for themselves in this league and are doing just that. It's not just them though, guys like Afflalo, Stevenson, Morrow, Dixon, and everyone else play 110% if they get the chance.
So one must ask himself, Do the Pistons really need to make a trade? We know it was only 2 games, but in those 2 games we have ssen somthing out of the Pistons that we just haven't seen this season. Passion, passion to go out and give it everything you got. No matter who your playing, where your playing, or the score on the scoreboard. After these 2 impressive games most of us thought the Pistons might be standing pat. Don't tell that to the Detroit GM.
Detroit has tried experimenting with big named stars before. Dwight Howard, Carmelo Anthony, and even Iggy who is considered somewhat of a star. The expermints have seemed to llok great in the begginning, but when you have one star he commands the ball way more than the others and thats the problem. Now if you can get two stars and surrounded him with the right pieces? That can work.
We heard out of Auburn Hills this morning that the Pistons do have a trade in place that would get them one of the leagues biggest star well still keeping most of there team in tact. We believe that the deal would send out 2 Pistons starters and a key player off the bench. The trigger hasn't been pulled yet though, and no need for it to be. There is still 3 days left to the trade deadline and no need to make a deal if you believe you can get more back.
The Pistons GM has also stated that the odds off making a big deal before the deadline are 30-70, he said most likley if the teams does make a deal it will be minor and will be one to help gain cap space or draft picks. Now some Pistons fans probally will be banging there head if they dont make a deal, but do the Pistons really need to? They have eough pieces in place to make a deep playoff run, and probally the brightest future in the NBA considering the kids they have on there bench.
So one must ask again, Is this the Pistons team you want? We all miss the days of the Billups-Howard era, but we can't go back down. If the team has a chance to win is it this lineup? Or will a star or 2 coming in really be the key to turning this team into the dominate one that it use to be. We will know not to long from now.
We also will be taking questions from readers on are thoughts on the Pistons making trades, and other things going around in the NBA
