JR Smith has informed me multiple times that he has no intentions of riding the bench this upcomming season, especially if it means that he may not even be the 6th man in Utah. He would really like an opportunity to be the starter for a team, and plans to hold out until he gets an offer like this.

We were unclear when we were talking, J.R. would be starting at SG. Jefferson will either be moved, or play at SF. Millsap will be on the bench.

Ahhh... then it's a whole different story
My client and I have examined the situation in Utah, and JR really likes where he fits in with the team. If he is guranteed the starting position, then Utah would definately be an option. But at the same time, we realize that there are a lot of teams with a bunch of cap space this offseason, and we would like to wait and see if JR can get significantly more money from elsewhere. At this point, he really isn't concerned with winning a title as he is with putting up good stats. If you guys wish to make a new offer right now, then we will highly consider it. We will also keep Utah in mind if JR does decide to enter regular free agency.

We appreciate that the Jazz are very committed to bringing JR to Utah, but the offer would really need to blow our socks off for JR not to enter free agency. We will definately make note of Utah's consistency though.

Counter Offer:
Year 1: $8,500,000 Year 2: $9,000,000 Year 3: $10,000,000 Year 4: $11,000,000
We would be very excited if you were to accept this offer, but please keep in mind that the price of my client is only so high right now because this contract would keep him from testing the water with other teams. It is possible that he would be willing to sign for less in regular free agency, but then you would have a chance of losing him.

The situation has changed now though, he would be playing for the Timberwolves and he would be the starting Small Forward.

We would like to know the lineup that JR would be playing with, since we are a bit confused now.

Well, Utah thought that Smith is asking for a little too much. So now we would like Smith to be the starting Small Forward. The lineup would be:
PG: Nate Robinson SG: Ben Gordon SF: J.R. Smith PF: Andres Nocioni C: Ben Wallace

My client really just isn't sure that Minnesota is the right place for him. He really has no interest in playing small forward, and he has expressed concerns about the tallest player in the starting lineup being only 6'8. Ideally, he would like to go to a young system where he could be a focal point of the offense at SG, and have a good PG to play with. But, we are giving you an opportunity to blow us away with an offer that we can't refuse... but if that doesn't happen, then my client will be hitting the market.

We were really excited seeing J.R. back in Minnesota this year. But we are drawing the limit at the last offer. We feel that it is way too much money to spend on J.R. We hope J.R. will continue to have a bright career ahead of him.

Well we definately want to continue negotiations with you during regular FA, and you may be able to sign my client cheaper. Anyway, looks like JR will be hitting free agency.
